| The village of Bunanbutye consists of 400 families in mudhuts on a large plain, 32 miles (45 km) from Mbale, the nearest big town (58.000).
The villagers are peasant farmers but hampered by the raiding Karimojong tribe from the north, who steal their catle. In May 1998, 27 people were killed and houses were burned (see article). The Ugandan government has recently stationed soldiers in the area to prevent further incidents and have begun a programme to disarm the Karimojong tribe. Many of the villagers have died of cholera and dyssentry from drinking the river water. Average life expectancy is 36 years. Malaria and Aids are grave problems. To prevent malaria, Ezra has provided mosquito nets for the families of the sponsored children. CARE International have renovated the clinic in Bunanbutye, but it still lacks adequate medicine and expertise. Ezra has undertaken an agreement with the clinic that it will pay medical fees and treatment for all sponsored children and their guardians as well as any emergency treatment of other children. Serious cases are referred to a paediatrican in Mbale. Expenses are met by Ezra. |
